Report - Free Junior Clinics - 2013
Read about and see photos from the free junior clinics this summer. Twenty-eight years ago, the La Jolla Tennis Club Board of Directors voted to fund an annual junior clinic for kids six through twelve, at no cost to the participants. The clinic has grown from one instructor and a couple of assistants teaching on three courts, to six instructors on six courts teaching tennis to over 100 kids daily, two sessions per day, during the ten-day clinic.
The kids are taught the basic strokes of tennis, sportsmanship and tennis etiquette. The clinic is concluded on the final Friday with a Carnival Day where kids hit for prizes. Everybody wins something! This is also the day when the annual Rosmond Hyde Award is presented to the most inspirational player in the clinic. Rosmond was a former board member and life-long nationally-ranked senior tennis player. She had a passion for teaching young players the game of tennis. This year’s recipient is Kaili Baquial, who will receive five free lessons from Head Pro Brent Davis. The free lessons are sponsored annually by the Hyde family. A perpetual plaque is displayed at the club house listing all of the past recipients
We thank Head Pro Brent Davis and his staff for another very successful free junior clinic. It’s a daunting task organizing and instructing 100 plus rambunctious kids on a daily basis. And thanks to all the board and club members who contributed to the success of this year’s clinic.
Although the clinic is free to the participants, all costs are paid from the club treasury; any donations from the general public would be graciously accepted.
